IELTS with SID|Tips|IELTS Writing

Updated: Jul 1, 2020

IELTS has four Modules; Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. IELTS Writing Task#2 is the most trickier to master than any-other part or type of question in the IELTS Exam. It consists on; a topic information, an appropriate range of vocabulary and a skill to balance sentence structures in a meaningful composition.

Special thanks to British Council for their reach-out IELTS trainer programs and online sessions, to provide with the NEW material and guidance, so, that teachers could instruct their students world-wide.

Usually it has been NOTICED that the TOPICS given to General Training candidates are mostly informal styles as compared to the ones given to the IELTS students for Academic needs. However, there are Topics which are the same for both types of IELTS. Read, Listen, take notes and write to practice further.

Look at the band descriptors for Bands 5, 6 and 7. Understand the marking criteria for IELTS Writing Task 2

Band 5 ‘uses a limited range of vocabulary; may make noticeable errors in spelling and/or word formation that may cause some difficulty for the reader’

Band 6 ‘uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task; attempts to use less common vocabulary but with some inaccuracy; makes some errors in spelling and/or word formation, but they do not impede communication

Band 7 ‘uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision; uses less common lexical items with some awareness of style and collocation; may produce occasional errors in word choice, spelling and/or word formation

It’s not about being perfect – at Band 7 you can make occasional errors…

– but it is about showing that you have a wide enough range of vocabulary to successfully carry out the task, and can use some less common or everyday vocabulary. There is no simple list of topics for IELTS Writing. Almost anything can come up.

Some topics occur more often than others. Some of the more popular topics and questions include:

Health and healthcare issues – questions on government spending, private medicine, diet, exercise, obesity, smoking

Education – the role of education at different life stages, private versus public education, overseas study, the relevance of different subjects, discipline, gender differences, lifelong learning

Where to find new vocabulary ?

Here are a few recommended resources to get good vocabulary words.

How to learn and remember new vocabulary

  • Be selective. Don’t try to learn too much at one time. When you find expressions that you think are useful, record them in a notebook or on your phone.

  • Always record new words in context, not on their own. This will help you to remember and will also help you use them correctly in future.

  • Picking chunks from the sample essays is also one productive tip.

  • Use new vocabulary as soon as possible. If you read an interesting article on tourism, for example, find an IELTS writing task on the same subject and try using the new vocabulary straight away.

  • Use spaced repetition. It’s not enough to use new vocabulary once then move on, and it’s not good to repeat it over and over again in one day. Use it as soon as you can, then again the next day, then a few days later and so on until you remember it easily.

Formal and informal style to write for IELTS Writing Task:2. Follow the samples given below to comprehend the difference..

Brain-storming and planing is a necessary step before attempting IELTS Writing Task:2 ..

Introduction in IELTS Writing Task:2

The Essay Writing.

1. Outline the topic and give context for your answer. This involves stating in your own words what the situation or problem is, then adding any necessary details or examples to illustrate or clarify it. One or two sentences is all you need for this. 2. Restate the question in your own words. For example, if the question asks you ‘What are the advantages and disadvantages?’ you might write something like, ‘This has brought many benefits to society, but it has also created a number of problems’. 3. Depending on the question type, the final sentence of your introduction might state what your opinion isexplain what you plan to do in the rest of the essay, or ask a new question which you will go on and answer, such as ‘what does this mean for the future of education?’

A good conclusion should:

  • not be more than two to three sentences long

  • briefly summarise your main points

  • bring the essay to a clear, satisfying end

  • not introduce any new ideas or arguments

Significance of Grammar for establishing a band 7 essay.

Band 5 limited range of structures, attempts complex sentences but these tend to be less accurate than simple sentences, may make frequent grammatical errors and punctuation may be faulty; errors can cause some difficulty for the reader.

Band 6 Simple and complex sentence forms and makes some errors in grammar and punctuation but these rarely reduce communication.

Band 7 Complex structures, produces frequent error-free sentences and has good control of grammar and punctuation but may make a few errors.

INTRODUCTION in IELTS Writing Task:2

Paragraph#1

Most of the firms, organization and companies as well as governments make restrictions to smoke in work places and public amenities respectively. It has become fashionable in the world today to blame smoking. However, although I feel that smoking can be harmful, but I don’t think it should be forbidden completely. I would also argue that people should have the right whether they smoke or not.

Main Body#1 Paragraph#2

Let me deal with the three positive sides of smoking. Firstly, smoking certainly helps many people to relax. For some, it even improves concentration. If someone is upset owing to debt or they have exam, like to smoke to reduce the pressure or tension. Most of the people like to smoke when they are relaxing with friends. Secondly, governments throughout the world make huge profits from taxes on cigarettes. The income obtained from taxes provide funds which are used for building school, hospital and public places such as parks, gardens, sports ground and foot paths. Thirdly, tobacco industry also employs tens of thousands of people all over the world, particularly in poorer countries like Zimbabwe or India. Without cigarettes, these people would have no jobs.

Main Body#2 Paragraph#2

Despite these positive effects there are lots of negative effects of smoking too. Initially, smoking has been proven to be too dangerous for health. As one cigarette contains more than 4000 chemical substances, therefore, it causes for many dangerous diseases such as heart attacks, asthma, bronchitis or lung cancer. According to a recent report, in Britain about 3,500 people are killed each year in road accidents and 120,000 are killed by smoking. Furthermore, smoking costs governments millions of dollars because of the large number of people who need treatment in hospitals for smoking-related problems. Moreover, passive smoking is a major concern today. Recent research shows that non-smokers can suffer from health problems if they spend long periods of time among people who do smoke. In UK children whose parents are smoke are three times as likely to start smoking themselves _.

Paragraph#4 Conclusion;

In short, I think the world would be a better place without cigarettes. However, the decision as to whether _ smoke or not should be for each individual to make. I suggest that people should not smoke in a room or a place where there are non smokers, however they should be free to smoke elsewhere.

Examiner’s Comments..

This a very good essay, you have made your arguments well and set the paragraphs out as required. However, take care with your use of definitive statements e.g. Without cigarettes, these people would have no jobs. Maybe they would gain employment in another industry, we cannot be sure. Over all, well done! 7.5 to 8-Bands app
